Excursion to Terque. 14 October, 2018
Let us take you to the Old Crafts Revival Festival, where you can enjoy the unique crafts strongly bonded with the areas traditional products and found only in Alpujarra of Almeria.
Not long ago, there was a time when, at the end of each summer the green vine arbours of the vine-growing villages burst into a flurry of activity. It was the time of the grape harvest, the most exciting time of the year.
From the middle of August until October men, women and children gathered in vine arbours to pick and clean grapes, and pack them into barrels. The barrels were sealed up by “cappers”, loaded on pack mule wagons and transported by “muleteers” to Almeria port.
This time of year was long-awaited by many families, it was their chance of being paid, but it also meant a time of worry…
Will it Rain?
Will they pay for the grapes?
Will the grape arrive in a fit condition to be auctioned?
We are visiting a town which for more than a century cultivated a grape that became famous as the Grape of the Boat (La Uva del Barco). The tradition of growing grapevines in arbours can still be seen in the surrounding fields.
Strolling through the streets you can enjoy the architecture of mansion houses belonging to the families dedicated to successful export activities. American and British markets were the main destinations for the Grape of the Boat.
There is no doubt that on this festive day you will be submerged in a joyful atmosphere of workshops and demonstrations of the crafts, revived if only for one day, that used to be related to the production of the grape known as Uva del Barco.
Craftsmen working with cane and esparto, potters, coopers, barrel fillers, cutlers, laundry maids, town criers and postmen, as well as other participants will demonstrate their art, together creating an unforgettable day.
The village boasts five museums that can also be visited: the Ethnographic museum of Terque, the Provincial Museum of the Grape of the Boat, The Modernista, the Exposition of Written Documents and the San Jose Cave Museum .
And to replenish our strength nothing could be better than a serving of paella and a drink.
We recommend: wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and bring sun protection such as a cap or a hat, and sun screen
